The 17-year-old's identity is being withheld by state police. Brendan Cary, 19 and Dominic Reyes, a recent Delsea graduate were also killed in the crash, Charles Marchan, a spokesman for the New Jersey State Police said.
At 4:17 p.m., troopers responded to Route 55 North in Elk Township, after Cary's Honda passenger vehicle struck a Dodge minivan that was disabled on the right shoulder, Charles Marchan, a spokesman for the New Jersey State Police said.
Cary lost directional control, striking the Dodge, causing it to overturn, Marchan said. Reyes and the 17-year-old were passengers with Cary, police said.
"Our school family is heartbroken, and our thoughts are with their families, friends, and all who knew and loved them," Fran Ciocola, the superintendent of Delsea Regional High School District said.
Ciocola said counselors would be available the school and encouraged students in need to reach out.
"The impact of such a profound loss is not only immediate but will be felt for a long time," Cicocola said. "Healing takes time, and it is in moments like these that we must lean on one another, drawing strength from our shared compassion and support."
The driver of the Dodge sustained serious injuries, Marchan said. Three juveniles in the Dodge sustained minor injuries, Marchan said.
